About Meatless Mondays
Going meatless a minimum of once a week can reduce your risk of chronic diseases, cancers, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cardiovascular disease. It will also help to reduce environmental pollutions, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the escalation of carbon dioxide causing climate change. It will also help save valuable finite resources like fresh water and fossil fuels. And it will mean fewer animals will be raised in horrific factory farm conditions, suffer their entire lives, and then be slaughtered. It’s a win-win!
But Meatless Monday is only one day out of seven, and will not solve the problems associated with meat. Try reducing meat consumption by eating less meat during the week, or consider not eating meat altogether, to more significantly and positively impact your health, the suffering of animals, factory farm workers, and the environment.
What is Meatless Monday?
Meatless Monday is an initiative of The Monday Campaigns, a non-profit health initiative associated with Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse Universities, that dedicates the first day of the week to good health. They advocate for Mondays being the day that people everywhere commit to healthy behaviors to reduce and end chronic preventable diseases.
Why Meatless Monday?
- American’s are eating on average twice the amount of meat they ate on average in 1960, before fast food chains were everywhere. Diets high in meat are linked to cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and chronic illnesses. Plus, the meat industry is now generating almost one quarter or 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions accelerating climate change. Today’s factory farmed cows are fed a diet of grains–especially corn–that could be used to feed humans instead. Plus to produce a single pound of meat for us to eat, it takes an estimated twenty five hundred gallons water! Not to mention the cows inhale and smell their own manure fumes everyday, for their entire lives on factory farms–and they suffer everyday of their lives.
