This list of animal sanctuaries in the U.S. combines sanctuaries that are accredited by the American Sanctuary Association (ASA), the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), are listed in the Compassionate Farming Education Initiative (CFEI), as well as some larger animal sanctuaries that are outside of these lists. The sanctuaries listed below are for farm animals, exotic animals, wild animals, wildlife rehabilitation and some more notable sanctuaries for domestic animals, primarily for horses and dogs. This list is not a comprehensive list for the U.S., but it does highlight the sanctuaries that are accredited by the two major accreditation organizations in the U.S., plus includes some larger, notable animal sanctuaries.

The American Sanctuary Association (ASA) is an accrediting organization that maintains strict policies and procedures for animal sanctuaries to comply with including a detailed application process, high quality animal care standards and housing requirements. They conduct routine visits to animal sanctuaries to verify that sanctuary facilities are meeting or exceeding set standards and policies. Plus, member sanctuaries cannot breed, sell or trade animals, nor use them for commercial purposes. In addition, ASA works to find homes for abused, neglected, abandoned, seized exotic, farm and companion animals, and seized and abused exotic animals.

These are GFAS Accredited and Verified Facilities. Per the GFAS website, both Accredited and Verified facilities provide humane and responsible care of the animals, including housing, physical facilities and security, records, transportation, nutrition, veterinary care, and well-being (physical, emotional, behavioral), as well as at least minimal financial reserves and a lease contingency plan if on rented land. A “Verified” status as opposed to an “Accredited” status often reflects constrictions imposed by financial resources.
