Visit, Volunteer and Donate to an Animal Sanctuary

The majority of animals rescued and living in an animal sanctuary have come from extreme neglect, abuse or cruelty; were exploited for entertainment or used for biomedical research; or were abandoned or forfeited by their owners. Farm animals that are rescued can come from extreme physical confinement; have been subject to routine mutilations; have experienced extreme cruelty and abuse on industrial and family farms; often have medical problems due to neglect or are chronically ill or handicapped from lack of movement; and some farm animals escaped from their transit to the slaughterhouse or as a result of being unable to move or walk—were left to die outside the slaughterhouse doors.

Good animal sanctuaries provide a safe haven from the exploitation of an animal’s past life and ensure routine and immediate veterinary care; provide quality and appropriate food and nutrition; offer adequate and proper shelter from the elements, and a natural environment that promotes and respects the animal’s well being. Sanctuaries provide a permanent home where animals are allowed to live out their natural life — free from harm.

What is a Farm Sanctuary?

Farm sanctuaries provide refuge and a permanent home to farm animals that have been neglected, abused, injured, or were displaced and abandoned. Animals are rescued from all size farms including small and large commercial farms, factory farms, family farms, slaughterhouses, and cases of severe neglect and cruelty. Many of the animals require significant medical attention and can have failing health due to enduring cruel living conditions that don’t provide needed health or veterinary care. Many farms that raise animals for food are unwilling to provide routine medical care or needed veterinary treatment—in order to reduce costs and increase business profits. So when these farm animals are rescued they can require long periods of medical and emotional rehabilitation to heal. Some farm sanctuaries will have adoption programs where they make every effort to find safe, permanent homes for the animals. Others offer educational programs, guided tours, and have visitation hours on specific days.

Visit an Animal Sanctuary

Visiting a sanctuary, whether a farm animal, domestic animal, or wildlife sanctuary, can be a transformative and moving experience. Meeting the animals face-to-face and touching and petting them in their natural surroundings, will be a memory you won’t soon forget. You will come to see the animal’s individual personalities up close, and come to know their back stories, and how they were rescued. Many people who visit a farm animal sanctuary will only have known the cow, pig, chicken, turkey or baby lamb as “meat” and not the unique, feeling, sentient being that you will witness and experience. Visiting a sanctuary can open one’s eyes and awareness to the physical and emotional violence these animals have endured in their past life—to the cruelty they have faced everyday in the meat industry, entertainment industry, biomedical research industry, and in the pet trade. It’s an opportunity to educate children and adults alike about the exploitation and horrors these animals have experienced for our benefit. Many people are transformed by this experience and consequently change their consumer and lifestyle habits away from products that cause harm and misery to animals, and instead choose to a lifestyle that only supports a humane economy.

Volunteer at an Animal Sanctuary

Many animal sanctuaries depend on volunteers to provide much-needed support on a daily basis. Sanctuaries can struggle to do the necessary work of caring for the animals without the help of volunteers. Volunteer staff typically work in all weather and conditions, everyday—doing a variety of tasks including preparing food, feeding, cleaning, maintenance, socialization, and administrative support. It can be a rewarding way to spend your time and help animals. Volunteering your time on a regular basis will provide needed care for the animals and help the sanctuary continue their mission for many years into the future.

Accredited Animal Sanctuaries in the U.S.

American Sanctuary Association’s list of accredited sanctuaries.

The American Sanctuary Association (ASA) is an accrediting organization that maintains strict policies and procedures for animal sanctuaries to comply with, including a detailed application process, high quality animal care standards, and specific housing requirements. They conduct routine visits to animal sanctuaries to verify sanctuary facilities are meeting or exceeding set standards and policies. Plus, member sanctuaries are not allowed to breed, sell or trade animals, or use them for commercial purposes. In addition, ASA works to find homes for abused, neglected and abandoned animals; farm and companion animals seized from abusive or neglectful situations; and abused and seized exotic animals.

GFAS Accredited Sanctuaries & GFAS Verified Sanctuaries

Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS)

This list of GFAS animal sanctuaries have been accredited and verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). Per the GFAS website, both “Accredited” and “Verified” facilities provide humane and responsible care of the animals, including adequate and safe housing, physical facilities and security at the facilities; requisite record keeping; transportation for all animals; proper nutrition; routine and needed veterinary care; physical, emotional and behavioral support for animals’ well-being; as well as minimal financial reserves and a lease contingency plan if the sanctuary is located on rented land. A “Verified” status as opposed to an “Accredited” status often reflects constrictions imposed by financial resources.
