Healthy at 100 shows us another way to grow old in good health with vitality, joy and beauty. In this landmark book, Robbins explores how a plant-based diet, exercise and the mind-body connection can help us live long and healthy lives. The first part of the book examines four of the world’s healthiest and longest-lived peoples: the Abkhasia from the Caucasus, the Vilcabamba from the Ecuadorian Andes mountains, the Hunza from northern Pakistan, and the centenarians of Okinawa, Japan. These four communities represent people who live to a ripe old age–often well beyond 100–while staying physically fit, doing regular daily exercise, experiencing little or no diseases or chronic illnesses, and contributing to their communities, even in their final days. Robbins sheds light on how all these communities have several things in common including their extended life spans beyond 100, non-existent chronic illness or heart disease, an active lifestyle, a 99% plant-based diet—with negligible dairy or meat, growing their own food, having a strong community-based lifestyle, and consuming little or no sugar, packaged or processed foods.
Robbins goes on to explore how our attitudes and level of social engagement profoundly affect our health and longevity. He examines the healthy functioning of the brain and preventing Alzheimers with a whole food, plant-based diet high in antioxidants, along with getting regular exercise. He discusses the link between people eating animal-based diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol with having much higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. At the end of the book, Robbins suggests how to break free of negative cultural norms, giving examples of positive and negative cultural influences that can impact our health and well being. Robbins ends on “Steps You Can Take” to increase the quality and longevity of your life.
