More than 35,500 species are critically endangered and threatened with extinction today. That equals 28 percent of all assessed species in the world. This includes:

- 26% Mammals
- 33% Sharks and Rays
- 14% Birds
- 28% Selected Crustaceans
- 34% Conifers
- 33% Reef Corals
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species has been the most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of wild animal and plant species. The IUCN Red List has provided a needed tool to catalyze action to protect biodiversity, conservation and inspire policy change. The IUCN Red List provides vital information about population size, habitat and environment, threats, range, use and/or trade, and needed conservation actions in order to make critical decisions that will save these species.
