Horse Advocacy and Protection Organizations
These nonprofit organizations are extremely effective at protecting horses, advocating for horses, improving the quality of life for horses, educating about horses and their plight, rescuing horses in danger, and caring for domestic horses and wild horses in the U.S.
American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) – AWHC works to protect America’s wild horses and burros by stopping the federal government’s systematic elimination of these national icons from our public lands.
Alliance of Wild Horse Advocates – Committed to humane and scientifically-based management of wild horses and burros and of our western rangeland habitats. This organization is dedicated to preserving America’s wild horses and burros.
Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages – All about the horse-drawn carriage industry and how you can get involved to help ban it.
Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) – Days End Farm Horse Rescue (Days End) is a volunteer-based, animal welfare organization established in 1989 to ensure quality care and treatment of horses through intervention, education and outreach. Since its beginning in 1989, DEFHR has been a place where children and adults have found enrichment, satisfaction, sadness and purpose through helping to provide care for unwanted, abused or neglected horses. DEFHR has gone from a small non-profit sheltering only a few horses annually, to a full-scale and well-respected rescue and rehabilitation facility housing on average 60 to 90 horses at any given point in time.
Dreamchaser PMU Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation – Working to stop the cruel production of the estrogen-replacement drug Premarin, which uses pregnant mares for estrogen rich urine.
Equine Advocates – Equine Advocates is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) equine protection organization founded in 1996. Since then they have rescued thousands of equines, including horses, ponies, donkeys and mules from slaughter, abuse and neglect. Equine Advocates mission is to rescue, protect and prevent the abuse of horses through education, investigation, rescue operations; and the dissemination of information to the public; and the operation of a horse sanctuary for slaughter-bound, abused and neglected horses.
Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) – The Conscience of the Horse Industry. EWA is dedicated to ending the slaughter of American horses and the preservation and protection of wild Horses and Burros on public lands. They are an all-volunteer 501©(4) umbrella organization representing 330 member organizations.
Front Range Equine Rescue – Front Range Equine Rescue is dedicated to stopping the abuse and neglect of horses. Through rescue, education and advocacy, they help at-risk horses at both local and national levels.
Habitat For Horses, Inc. – The mission of Habitat For Horses is to promote and secure the safety and well being of all horses; to encourage education concerning the physical and mental health of horses; to explore and establish connections with young adults who can benefit emotionally from involvement with horses; to promote the proper training of horses through positive training techniques, and to provide a home for those horses who are no longer able to be productive, where the nonprofit assumes the responsibility of these horses for the remainder of their natural lives.
Homes For Horses Coalition – Co-founded by the HSUS, the Homes for Horses Coalition is a group of equine welfare and rescue organizations dedicated to ending horse slaughter and equine abuse as well as promoting collaboration and professionalism in the equine rescue community.
Horseracing Wrongs – Horseracing Wrongs is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to eradicating horseracing in the United States. They are the only organization in the country that is clearly and consistently working toward that end.
International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB) – ISPMB is the oldest wild horse and burro organization in the U.S. and has been innovative in the field of wild horse and burro protection. Under the leadership of the first President, Velma Johnston, otherwise known as Wild Horse Annie, ISPMB and Annie were responsible for the passage of federal legislation in 1971 that gave protection to wild horses and burros on public lands from death and harassment.
NYClass (New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets) – NYClass is a a 501(c)(4) non-profit animal rights organization founded in 2008 on the core mission of saving NYC carriage horses, enacting animal rights legislation into law, and electing pro-animal candidates to office. NYCLASS is committed to changing the world for animals and seeks to create a truly humane society for all by passing New York City and State legislation, embracing grassroots efforts and on the street activism to educate and activate the public.
Organizations Opposed to Horse Slaughter – A current listing of organizations and individuals opposed to the slaughter of American horses for human consumption. They support all local, state and federal legislative efforts to ban the practice in the U.S. including the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act and American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
Return to Freedom – Return to Freedom is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to protect wild horses through legislation, lobbying, and hands-on rescue. They are dedicated to preserving the freedom, diversity, and habitat of America’s wild horses through advocacy, sanctuary, education, and conservation, while enriching the human spirit through direct experience with the natural world.
The Cloud Foundation – The Cloud Foundation is a Colorado 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, that grew out of Ginger Kathrens’ knowledge and fear for not only Cloud’s herd but other wild horses in the West. The non- profit Cloud Foundation is dedicated to preventing the extinction of Cloud’s herd through education, media events and programming, and public involvement. The Foundation is also determined to protect other wild horse herds on public lands, especially isolated herds with unique characteristics and historical significance.
The Coalition for the Protection of Horses – The Coalition for the Protection of Horses was formed in 2008 and collaborates with Animal Aid (UK), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (USA), and Horseracing Wrongs (USA) to address the serious animal welfare concerns in horse racing and to bring about positive changes for the animals and the industry.
THE FUND FOR HORSES (@horsefund) – is the single most influential lobbying and watchdog organization dedicated to the protection of horses.
The Homes For Horses Coalition – The Coalition is dedicated to ending horse slaughter and other forms of equine abuse, while promoting growth, collaboration and professionalism in the equine rescue and protection community. The Coalition is a group of professionals working together to actively promote the welfare and protection of horses and other equines. By working to end horse slaughter and other forms of equine cruelty, provide care and homes to horses in need, advance the highest operating standards for equine rescue and retirement homes and promote responsible horse ownership, the Homes for Horses Coalition is actively engaged in improving the lives of America’s equines.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) – HSUS advocates for horses and against horse slaughter in the U.S. and horse-meat exporting through legislation. HSUS provides the public with resources and education about horse slaughter, and works with the media and federal legislators to fight horse slaughter.
Wild Horse Education (WHE) – WHE’s mission is to educate the public about the plight of wild horses and burros on public land, and in the government warehousing system for these animals including sale and final disposition; working to end the inhumane treatment of these heritage animals; encouraging the creation of a sane, scientifically-based management strategy for these animals in the wild; promoting public adoptions and support those who adopt, and assisting the public to advocate for the welfare of wild horses and burros.
Wild Horse Freedom Federation – “We are not a rescue, sanctuary or lobbying group but instead we are a lean, mean handful of private citizens who have banded together to make one last stand for our rapidly diminishing herds of wild horses and burros; that final battle is being fought in the court rooms of the United States of America.” Fundraising goes to pay legal bills that fight for the future freedom of our wild horses and burros.
World Horse Welfare – World Horse Welfare focuses on the lives of horses in the UK and worldwide, with a mission to work with horses, horse owners, communities, organizations and governments to improve welfare standards and end the suffering of horses in the UK and worldwide.
